Trumpet playing Jazz

Harmony of Chaos

Jazz played in his headphones. Where are you? By the Ben Webster Quintet.

It was definitely a Jazz type of morning.

Jim used music to change his reality. The right song or style of music could transport him, at least emotionally, to another place.

What he really wanted was peace and quiet, but that wasn’t an option.

Living with a significant other oft times requires compromise and this morning was one of those moments.

It was later in the morning, his coffee getting cold, and Jim and his wife Nicole were sitting together in the living room.

Both were reading to some degree and simply enjoying being with each other.

Nicole’s choice of subject matter couldn’t be more different from Jim’s however. While he sat reading a science fiction novel, she swiped through her Facebook stream and remarked on interesting titles.

Jim enjoyed harmony and peace found in the quiet of his own thoughts and a calm environment around him. Nicole sought the opposite.

She found peace in orchestrated chaos.

So there they sat, Nicole finding interest in divisive and biased social media posts while Jim quieted his mind with the thoughts of another and immersed himself in a novel whose pages turned themselves. All the while, the television played counterpoint to Jim’s desire of peace and order and further increased Nicole’s need for speed.

And the Jazz played on.

Moments together are important for a relationship to succeed and compromise is at times necessary. Compromise is a true gift of love that the receiver can’t possibly comprehend the difficulty with which it was given.

So as Jim sat next to his wife, warm from her chaos induced happiness, he adjusted his headphones that added to the disharmony of the morning and listened to Jazz as he read.
